Todd Brix over at the Microsoft Windows Mobile Blog has posted an article clarifying the arrival date of the Microsoft Marketplace for Mobile for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 users. The verdict? Before the end of the year.
As we’ve been discussing since July, our plan is to deliver the full Marketplace experience in two phases. First, we’ll launch Windows Marketplace for Mobile with Windows phones on October 6th. We’ve also discussed following this launch with an update that will include support for Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 by the end of the year.
Fair enough. Beyond that,
In addition, this second phase will bring the PC based catalog and shopping experience, user generated app reviews, advanced key-based anti-piracy protection and other enhancements that expand your business opportunity and make it easier for a larger number of customers to find and buy your application.
Check out this new device from C-motech, a Korean manufacturer. The new C-motech Mangrove 7″ Windows Mobile tablet is a 1GHz-fast Snapdragon-powered Windows Mobile 6.5 device that is all screen and no fat.
Thanks to the big huge screen they can cram in all kinds of goodies:
The very popular and handy SKTools suite of Windows Mobile utilities has just received a little upgrade to ready itself for Windows Mobile 6.5. The new update mainly brings gesture support, which is new to Windows Mobile 6.5. There are also a handful of bug fixes and minor updates.
You’re not a Windows Mobile power user if you haven’t got this app installed on your device. Check out the full list of features after the jump.
uConvert has just put out their new conversion utility for Windows Mobile and it looks really neat. With a great-looking slot-machine-style UI and tonnes of conversion choices (19 unit types, 25 currencies) and nice high resolution VGA and WVGA graphics, this is it for conversion apps.
Samsung has officially launched the new Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, pictured above; which looks a lot like the Jack, but with some beefed up specs.
The real news is that, in addition to this new handset, Samsung has annouced Windows Mobile 6.5 for the entire Omnia lineup from October 6th onwards. That means any new i8000, B7320, B7300, B7330, and B7610 will ship with 6.5. In addition, B7610s, and B7320s models already out there will get Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrades in short order.
The latest build of Windows Mobile 6.5 (23412, if you’re keeping track) shows a completely revamped Contacts application… finally! The new app focuses on the contact details that most people use: name, pic, mobile number and email, and leaves the billions of email 2, 3, fax, address 1, 2, 3, etc., hidden unless you specifically call them up. Nice improvement.
A new build of Windows Mobile 6.5 has just been released; build #23047 for those of you keeping track. This is pretty close to the final, final version, so if you’re looking for a preview of what’s to come on October 6th, check out this video.
Rumours abound that Sony Ericsson might make the SE Xperia X2 their last Windows Mobile device.
A tweet by Eldar Murtazin, who runs mobile-review.com, low sales forecasts (on the X1 and X2?) are causing them to re-think their commitment to the Windows Mobile platform. The SE Xperia X3 “Rachael” has already been confirmed to be an Android device, but the upcoming X2 is launching with Windows Mobile 6.5.
Most people doubt Windows Mobile 6.5 will stop the steady market share slide Microsoft is experiencing, so let’s hope Windows Mobile 7 does the trick.
A fellow on the XDA forums has reportedly found a full-on Xperia X1 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM. This is making many wonder aloud whether Sony may release an official ROM and make it available to X1 users. Others think it would lessen the appetite for their upcoming Xperia X2, which launches in October with 6.5.
Toshiba is set to re-launch their TG01, this time branded as the TG01 Windows Phone and sporting Windows Mobile 6.5. The TG01, if you recall, was a very sexy looking device on paper, featuring the Snapdragon processor, a 4.1″ WVGA screen and a 3.2megapixel camera. Sadly, reviews came back a little sour on the inherent limitations of WinMo 6.1 and the tweaks Toshiba themselves made in an effort to improve the UI.
This new TG01 is set to launch in Europe on October 6th, but Toshiba isn’t leaving their early adopters out in the cold: Toshiba is going to be providing a free Windows Mobile 6.5 download to all their TG01 users who bought with 6.1. This gives you the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, as well as a slew of UI improvements expected to roll out with this upcoming WinMo upgrade.
However, its not just the same old news — this time we’ve got word that over 10 devices running WinMo 6.5 are expected to be released into the wild… errr… the United States.
Microsoft Corp. expects several phones on the U.S. market to be powered by its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system after it launches in the fall of 2009, according to a company executive. “We will have over 10 phones available in the U.S. alone. We expect to see that grow,” said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division said during his keynote speech at the CTIA wireless technology showcase.
Still searching for a decent Facebook application for your WinMo phone? Well, in case you’ve missed this, some developers at XDA have recently supplied a rather awesome Facebook app.
Now, apparently this app is actually made by Microsoft themselves and has been stripped from the yet-to-be-released version of Windows Mobile - 6.5 (Build 21169). That being said, this app is in fact a pre-release version with ‘many known bugs’ (though, I couldn’t personally tell you what those bugs are as I’ve not actually run in to any myself, but see the list of known problems after the jump). I can tell you, I’ve been using it for a bit now and I really love it!
According to news coming out of the MIX09 conference, Windows Mobile 6.5 will not have its cool new honeycomb Start menu as we’ve come to expect. Apparently it received some negative feedback and Microsoft has decided to vito that particular interface.
We’re still glad to see that the icons are big enough to press accurately, now if only we could gain the ability to reorder the icons to our preference… here’s hoping!
We all knew it would happen eventually – on January 22nd a Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM for the HTC Fuze/Touch Pro was posted over at XDA Developers. Well, surprise surprise – XDA has received a legal complaint from Microsoft! XDA has, of course, pulled all the links for the cooked ROM as well as any other ROMs that are based on the yet-to-be-released operating system.
The e-mails sent to XDA Developers from Microsoft identify the site as ‘distributing unlicensed material and state’,
We hereby give notice of these activities to you and request that you take expeditious action to remove or disable access to the material described above, and thereby prevent the illegal reproduction and distribution of this copyright work(s) via your company’s network.
Have you been on the edge of your seat waiting for a good Windows Mobile Facebook app? Well wait no more – it’s here… sort of!
It seems the Facebook app that is intended to be released with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade has been extracted from the firmware and is now available for use with Windows Mobile 6.1 devices!
So as always with these kinds of applications, the download comes from the XDA-Developers forum. And, though everything should be just fine with this download, you are downloading at your own risk. That being said, enjoy!
Looks like there are a slew of awesome WinMo 6.5 phones set to come out this year, according to WMPowerUser.
On top of the previously seen Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2, the “Firestone” (above), successor to the once promising Touch HD, runs a 3.6-inch WVGA display, 600MHz processor and Windows Mobile 6.5. According to my sources, this one should be out sometime in August 2009. There’s also the HTC Whitestone which packs a 3.6 inch WVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera, 256 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and has a Qualcomm 7600 processor running at an impressive 528 Mhz. The device will have both GSM and EVDO and debut on the Verizon network in September.
Most impressive to us so far though is the poorly code named HTC “Thoth” which is clearly the Athena successor. The Thoth features a huge 4.8 inch WVGA screen, a 5 megapixel camera, 256 MB RAM/512 MB ROM, Windows Mobile 6.5, of course… but get this: It runs on a Qualcomm 8250 processor at 1000 Mhz! Keep your eyes peeled for this sexy lil thing September 2009!
Check after the jump for some leaked pictures of these cool yet-to-be-announced devices!
Last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona saw the theft of a prototype HTC phone that was running an early build of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5. The device was taken from Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo. Shortly after the theft, Microsoft wiped they device clean of all information remotely.
The device, a previously unreleased HTC Touch Diamond handset, was picked right from the pocket of Sol Trujillo directly after a demonstration. There has been much speculation as to what could be at stake on the demo product — personal/business information, highly sensitive emails or documents, and of course product information.
APC reports: “We spoke to a senior Microsoft staffer on condition of anonymity and they revealed that, other than the theft of a handset, the entire operating system and all the user data on the handset were remotely erased as soon as the theft was reported.”
