For those of you unlucky enough to have to buy a Windows Phone between now and Christmas, take heart! You’ll no longer be buying Windows Mobile devices, but rather Windows Phone Classic Edition. According to istartedsomething blogger Long Zheng, these Windows Phone Classic Edition devices will still keep coming as low-end devices for another year or two, well into Windows Phone 7’s run.
Good or bad idea? Considering Microsoft’s push to control the user experience, this seems destined to confuse smartpone newbies, but as long as HTC and Spb are there to provide decent shells… hey, why not! Microsoft has long been known for too many versions of absolutely every product they make, so why should Windows Phones be any different?

Is Windows Mobile 6.5 is helping to drive sales of HTC Windows Phones? According to HTC CEO Peter Chou:
HTC is currently cooperating with a number of carriers in Europe, including T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone, to promote the sales of HTC HD2 and demand from those carriers is outpacing supply, Chou indicated.
Digitimes and HTCPedia read this as evidence that WinMo 6.5 is helping to sell devices, but you’ve got to wonder: HTC makes excellent quality devices, has completely replaced the Windows Mobile interface with TouchFlo, TouchFlo 3D, and now Sense and just re-branded themselves and launched a new, expanded marketing campaign… so is this demand for their devices thanks to Windows Mobile 6.5 or in spite of it?
Anyone care to hazard a guess?

The tough-as-nails road warrior’s Windows Phone, the Samsung Jack, just just received a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5. This upgrade took a little work on AT&T and Microsoft’s part, as the Jack doesn’t sport some of the features you’d expect on a Windows Phone, notably the touchscreen.
That didn’t stop Sammy, and AT&T Samsung Jack users can now grab your Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade from the Samsung website. Here’s what you get:
- Windows Marketplace for Mobile: Discover apps that unlock the power of your Windows Phone, shop securely with confidence, and download instantly to your phone.
- Internet Explorer Mobile: Internet Explorer Mobile 6 delivers the same high quality browsing and media viewing experience that you’ve come to expect on your desktop computer. If you can see it in Internet Explorer on your PC, you’ll be able to see it just as well on your Windows Pphone, whether the content you want is on YouTube, a game using Flash animation, or on a social site like Facebook or MySpace.
- AT&T WiFi: Automatic access to over 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots nationwide is available on the Samsung Jack and is included in select smartphone data plans. This allows for fast and easy downloads of your favorite music, streaming videos, games, and more.
- Vlingo for Windows Phone: Instantly send a text or email message, call a friend, search the Web, open native applications and more, all by speaking into your Samsung Jack Windows Phone.

This nice long video from ai.rs shows Samsung’s Omnia II running Windows Mobile 6.5. Even though the Omnia II launched on Verizon with Windows Mobile 6.1, the Omnia II is in line for an upgrade. This video shows the Omnia II running Windows Mobile 6.5 and TouchWiz, Samsung’s UI replacement. TouchWiz appears to be quite expansive, with customized Windows UI screens right down to the little settings windows.
Anyone hear whether Verizon is offering an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 for current Samsung Omnia II users?

This little video shows Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile included with Windows Mobile 6.5 running on an HTC HD2, and it’s got multi-touch (or is it pinch-to-zoom?). The web browser on the new Zune HD got pretty rave reviews (for a Microsoft web browser)… a step in the right direction?

UK Windows Phone fans should be stoked: the new LG GM750 has just dropped on Vodafone running Windows Mobile 6.5! The LG GM-750 has pretty decent specs, including a 5mp camera, GPS, and a big, 3″ touch screen. This device is apparently exclusive to Vodafone, so enjoy, Brits!
Check out the LG GM-750 on Vodafone here.
As promised, the first official Windows Mobile 6.5 Upgrade for the HTC Touch Pro 2 has just been released into the wild and is ready for you Touch Pro 2 owners to head over to the official HTC website and download it!
Be sure that you’re aware that this ROM update (version 1.86.401.0) will actually clear all the data on the phone and replace the current OS — so make sure you backup all of your contacts, emails, messages and call history using something like PIM Backup (which I highly recommend).

I just read a post at PocketNow about this neat Windows Phone Custom Theme Generator that Microsoft has quietly launched. It allows you to use your favorite photo or any other image, add colors and style, and then text the custom theme straight to your phone (or your friend’s phone, for that matter).
It is only certified for the HTC Pure, the HTC Imagio, and the Samsung Intrepid, but it should work with any Windows Mobile 6.5 touchscreen phone that has the same screen resolution as one of those.
Hit up the Microsoft Windows Phone Custom Theme Generator and give it a try – report your findings below!
