Bet you forgot Microsoft would never look back at us poor 6.1 schmucks, eh? Not so!
Microsoft recently released Outlook Mobile Update 1.0, an update for Outlook Mobile on Windows Mobile 6.1 devices. This Outlook Mobile update introduces OTA update capability to Outlook and adds a bunch of Exchange Server 2010 capabilities. Some of the new features are:
conversation view
free/busy lookup
SMS sync
enhanced voicemail view
For people who need those features, that’s great, but for the rest of us the key improvement is this slick new UI, with a quick-actions bar, easy folder changing, and quick access to search, all features that come with Windows Mobile 6.5x.
Maybe it’s no Windows Mobile 6.5, but it’s nice to know HTC isn”t ignoring the poor schleps who don’t get Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrades.
For users of the not-too-long-ago really hot HTC Touch HD, HTC has just put out two new updates for Windows Mobile 6.1:
Office Mobile Enhancement: “this update is applicable to all ROM Versions” and “updates your Office Mobile products to make your life even more convenient, giving you the flexibility to work the way you like. Now with enhanced Find & Replace functionality, this feature frees you to quickly edit your documents on the go”.
Notifications Enhancement: “this update is applicable to all ROM Versions” and “combines your SMS function with our unique notifications to bring you your messages as soon as you get them. You will receive notifications whenever your phone is powered on and has reception, allowing you to stay close to the people you care about while on the go”.
This nice long video from ai.rs shows Samsung’s Omnia II running Windows Mobile 6.5. Even though the Omnia II launched on Verizon with Windows Mobile 6.1, the Omnia II is in line for an upgrade. This video shows the Omnia II running Windows Mobile 6.5 and TouchWiz, Samsung’s UI replacement. TouchWiz appears to be quite expansive, with customized Windows UI screens right down to the little settings windows.
Anyone hear whether Verizon is offering an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 for current Samsung Omnia II users?
Verizon has announced they’re launching the new Samsung Omnia II today, the big Windows Mobile 6.5 launch date… with Windows Mobile 6.1! An update to 6.5 is coming in mid-October, and the Samsung has their own proprietary UI on top of Windows Mobile anyway, so I guess it’s no big deal.
Todd Brix over at the Microsoft Windows Mobile Blog has posted an article clarifying the arrival date of the Microsoft Marketplace for Mobile for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 users. The verdict? Before the end of the year.
As we’ve been discussing since July, our plan is to deliver the full Marketplace experience in two phases. First, we’ll launch Windows Marketplace for Mobile with Windows phones on October 6th. We’ve also discussed following this launch with an update that will include support for Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 by the end of the year.
Fair enough. Beyond that,
In addition, this second phase will bring the PC based catalog and shopping experience, user generated app reviews, advanced key-based anti-piracy protection and other enhancements that expand your business opportunity and make it easier for a larger number of customers to find and buy your application.
The Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 – or what looks to be it, at least – has appeared in a promo from Samsung. Looking very hip and powerful, this new Omnia Pro is sporting some decent features, including a 3.5″ WVGA (800×400) screen, WiFi, GPS and an FM radio, and a 5PM camera.
uConvert has just put out their new conversion utility for Windows Mobile and it looks really neat. With a great-looking slot-machine-style UI and tonnes of conversion choices (19 unit types, 25 currencies) and nice high resolution VGA and WVGA graphics, this is it for conversion apps.
Samsung has officially launched the new Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, pictured above; which looks a lot like the Jack, but with some beefed up specs.
The real news is that, in addition to this new handset, Samsung has annouced Windows Mobile 6.5 for the entire Omnia lineup from October 6th onwards. That means any new i8000, B7320, B7300, B7330, and B7610 will ship with 6.5. In addition, B7610s, and B7320s models already out there will get Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrades in short order.
Toshiba is set to re-launch their TG01, this time branded as the TG01 Windows Phone and sporting Windows Mobile 6.5. The TG01, if you recall, was a very sexy looking device on paper, featuring the Snapdragon processor, a 4.1″ WVGA screen and a 3.2megapixel camera. Sadly, reviews came back a little sour on the inherent limitations of WinMo 6.1 and the tweaks Toshiba themselves made in an effort to improve the UI.
This new TG01 is set to launch in Europe on October 6th, but Toshiba isn’t leaving their early adopters out in the cold: Toshiba is going to be providing a free Windows Mobile 6.5 download to all their TG01 users who bought with 6.1. This gives you the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, as well as a slew of UI improvements expected to roll out with this upcoming WinMo upgrade.
The Windows Mobile Emulator, as the name suggests, allows you to emulate Windows Mobile (5, 6, 6.1) on your PC. This is especially helpful to developers but what about the rest of us? Well, maybe your old WinMo device can’t run cool new programs like the Last.fm player or the Iris web browser and you want to see if it’s worth buying a newer device that runs WinMo 5 or better. Sounds like a great reason to test drive a newer OS using Microsoft Device Emulator.
The Microsoft Device Emulator just got more useful by adding Bluetooth emulation as well! Have a look at the Bluetooth for Microsoft Device Emulator site. It shows how to install and configure all of the necessary components. This includes the FreeBT Bluetooth stack, which has to be installed on your hosting machine. But heads up — FreeBT is still in its alpha stage so if you’ve got any problems, be sure to check out their troubleshooting section.
AT&T has provided us all with its own hands-on video of three of its most anticipated phones of their spring line up – one of which is the Samsung Propel Pro – a Windows Mobile 6.1 device featuring a full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, and enterprise applications. The Samsung Propel Pro will be on sale for an expected $149.99 in April (customer’s pay $199.99 and after mail-in rebate, receive $50 AT&T promotion card).
The other two phones featured in the above video are both Symbian devices (Nokia’s E71x along with Samsung’s Impression) and will also be released as part of AT&T’s spring lineup.
Rumour has it that the Samsung Propel Pro (SGH-i627) will be dropping in on AT&T this week.
This Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (no touchy?) slider phone slides open to reveal a cute little QWERTY! It looks very neat, but is intended to be a low-end device — no wifi, camera is less than 1MP, small screen (only 2.2inches, 320×320), but it does have UMTS/HSDPA 3G, aGPS and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, and a microSD slot with SDHC compatibility for use with cards up to 32GB in size.
Have you been on the edge of your seat waiting for a good Windows Mobile Facebook app? Well wait no more – it’s here… sort of!
It seems the Facebook app that is intended to be released with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade has been extracted from the firmware and is now available for use with Windows Mobile 6.1 devices!
So as always with these kinds of applications, the download comes from the XDA-Developers forum. And, though everything should be just fine with this download, you are downloading at your own risk. That being said, enjoy!
I was really hoping for greatness with this program and got everything I expected and more. Ringo lets you easily add the awesome raw power of MP3, WMA or WAV format ringtones to every call tone on your device. You can use your favourite music or sound clip as a ringtone – just copy it to your WinMo phone and select it from Ringo’s easy-to-use interface. In addition, Ringo provides an easy way to set and change ringtones and SMS tones for your friends – just pick from a list of the contacts in your address book is listed. Each friend you set up can have a unique MP3, WMA, Wav or Midi ring and SMS tone.
Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of interest in Windows Mobile 6.1. Specifically, people wondering how they can upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1. Well, the following list might not be comprehensive, but it calls out a number of devices I’ve heard about lately and their update points.
The Samsung i907 – or the Epix as it’s known to those of us who love really cool names – is now for sale at AT&T. The specs on this phone are great: Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, touchscreen with haptic feedback, optical mouse, 2.0MP camera, Video Share, WiFi, GPS, and it’s going (both online and in stores) for a cool $199 with a contract and after a mail-in rebate.
Check out the AT&T site for more info on the Samsung i907 (Epix)!
