Windows Mobile as a baby monitor?

Yep. It exists. I don’t know how much I would trust my phone as a baby monitor (and I’m not alone), but the software does exist.

Baby Monitor for Windows Mobile, written by Russian resident Pavel Ananyev, works by using your phone to detect noises made by a distressed baby. The software features advanced noise suppression software which tells it to ignore environmental sounds which could trigger false alarms. It also automatically silences the ringer, so that your slumbering child wont be woken up by your crazy, loud ringtone.

I love what WMPowerUser had to say about this software:

On hearing a sound the phone will dial a pre-selected number, and you can listen in and confirm your baby is indeed awake. The author commends his solution, as it prevents issues with interference related to radio noise which plagues devices which run on the unlicensed spectrum that most baby monitors use, and of course features an unlimited radius of action, meaning you could be anywhere in the world (!) and still hear when your baby wakes up.

The software is going for $19.99. Any interested parties? Please, tell me all about it.

Palm Software Store is only a clever disguise

Well colour me disappointed. There’s all kinds of buzz today centered around the Palm Software Store now available for Windows Mobile and Palm OS devices but hopefuls should be ready for a let-down. Turns out that this app store is just a 28KB file that adds an icon to your phone that serves up a hyperlink to the online Palm Software Store (powered by PocketGear) when clicked. It’s no different, really, than the Sprint Store or the AT&T Mall software links that have been on WinMo devices for years now. Boo!

WinMo, where’s my super awesome app store? I’m waiting.

Review: Plant Tycoon (Game)

The object of Plant Tycoon is not so different from the goal of Fish Tycoon — only instead of finding the seven magic fish of Isola, you are to discover the four magic plants including the Magic Fruit of Life. Each magic plant will give you permanent enhancements and abilities that will bring fortune and fame to your plant nursery. You discover these magic plants by cross-breeding plants and solving genetic riddles.

You start with a couple of dollars, a handful of seeds, some soil and water. Grow plants, organize and harvest seeds. Monitor the plants health, age and maturity and be careful of dehydration and infestations. Sell some of your creations to fund your research and to buy better supplies to use in your Nursery. Discover the four magic plants and get rich!

Video: AT&T Fuze software tour

Pocketnow has posted the above video of their software tour of the AT&T Fuze. According to them, the Fuze comes with a lot of extra trial-ware games and doesn’t come with Windows Live or Windows Live Messenger. Hrmm. That’s no good! But it does save a bit of grace, apparently, in that it includes an SMS based IM client that does log in to AIM, Y!, and MSN.

Be sure to check out the above video for the full run down of the AT&T Fuze’s software!

Alert: Windows Mobile virus on the loose?

Vnunet.com is reporting today about a new mobile virus using an older infection technique to infect Windows Mobile users.

This so-called ‘companion virus’ is attacking users by assuming the identity of an existing file and moving the old file to a different location in your device’s storage. The virus then runs itself when the original file is called, often loading the displaced file after the virus code has been executed.

Researchers at McAfee have examined the virus and are surprised to find this particular infection technique still being used. Researcher Jimmy Shah had this to say:

This was a bit odd since companion viruses used to be more popular in the days of DOS and we haven’t seen too many on newer platforms.
