With all of the commotion with regards to Windows Phone 7, a new phone for Microsoft’s other new mobile platform slipped through the cracks. The Motorola ES400 is a rugged device with software based on Microsoft’s new Embedded Handheld platform. The phone is targeted at small and medium size businesses. As such, security and durability are the primary draws for the device. Click the link below for more information on the device and how it can potentially help your business.

Microsoft say "Oh no Moto"

Motorola have produced a number of Windows Mobile devices over the years. Just four years ago they had the Motorola Q and then, back in 2005, the MPx200. It’s fair to say that Motorola ran into a spot of bother but have shot back into the limelight thanks to the Android OS. Hot devices like the Motorola Droid have helped to propel the company back into the minds of many. However, today Microsoft have decided to file a patent infringement action against Motorola and it’s a direct aim at the Android OS …

“The patents at issue relate to a range of functionality embodied in Motorola’s Android smartphone devices that are essential to the smartphone user experience, including synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power.”

Motorola Droid Actually Failed Windows Phone?

motorola_droidThe guys over at MobileTechWorld are speculating that the new Motorola Droid Android device is actually an aborted Windows Phone. The specs of the new Motorola Droid Android device so closely match the Windows 7 Chassis specs, and Motorola was quite intimately involved in the development of Windows Mobile 7 until they bailed entirely, they say.

Motorola's Super Rugged Windows Mobile Device

motorola_mc9500-k_image_1I saw this neat post on intomobile.com about Motorola’s new MC9500-K ultra-rugged Windows Mobile device. This thing packs a serious punch! It comes, of course, with the usual Windows Mobile device specs:

  • 3.7″ VGA screen (640×480)
  • 800Mhz CPU
  • 3-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash
  • Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi b/g and IRDA

… you get the idea. But add it that:

  • swappable between GSM HSDPA and CDMA EVDO Rev A
  • shockproof, tumbleproof
  • field-swappable keypad options
  • 8+ hours of usage
  • 1D and 2D laser scanners
  • 3-axis accelerometer

This thing is a beast. Obviously meant for emergency workers, cops, first responders and the like, it can also double as a weapon as a last resort.  Check out the specs here at Motorola’s site.

Motorola Alexander cancelled

motolalexanderWell surprise, surprise – Motorola’s cancelled the once-anticipated Motorola Alexander, the 8MP camera smartphone with the cool NVidia graphics.

Sad, really, but not unexpected given that Motorola’s been trying to detach itself from WinMo lately in favour of Android.

They’ll be back though, you’ll see. When Windows Mobile 7 arrives in 2010, they’ll be back. They all come back.

Motorola says WinMo 7 will launch no earlier than 2010

windowsmobile65-concept

There are rumours floating around that Windows Mobile 7 won’t see the light of day until 2010 at the earliest. And who started these rumours? None other than Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha.

So what is it? We’ve seen ‘early 2009′ predictions, we’ve seen ’second half of 2009′ predictions from Microsoft themselves. Who’s got it right?

Paired with the ongoing rumours that Motorola will completely abandon WinMo in favor of the “more competitive” (and totally free to license) Android - could this be some kind of “fine, I didn’t want to be your friend anyway” smack talk?

Motorola parts ways with Windows Mobile

Well, it looks like Motorola will soon be focusing all of its smartphone attention on Android. This major restructuring will likely come hand in hand with significant layoffs as well.

In the past, Motorola has made some very interesting and popular Windows Mobile handsets such as the Q series and the recently announced A3100. I’m sad to see them go but I’m not entirely surprised, I suppose.

Leaked: Motorola Atila gets photographed

Remember the Motorola Atila? Motorola’s proposed answer to the iPhone 3G? Well, now that all the buzz has died down (as is the way with so many devices these days), new spy shots have been released as a reminder that this device will actually be coming out… someday.

Windows Mobile 6.5 to be launched in 2009, says Jha

Sanjay Jha, CEO Motorola

According PC Magazine, Motorola’s Sanjay Jha has confirmed (though strangely non-chalantly) that Motorola expects to release a phone based on Windows Mobile 6.5 platform in the second half of 2009.

Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that is Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform,” Jha said. “We have now targeted new teams which are focused – in California and Seattle – to deliver experiences. That is where we have to differentiate.

Motorola also announced that it plans to eliminate its MOTOMAGX and Symbian platforms in order to focus on the Google Android, Windows Mobile, and P2K 3G solutions.
