Microsoft goes after XDA Developers over WinMo 6.5 ROMs

xdadevelopers

We all knew it would happen eventually – on January 22nd a Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM for the HTC Fuze/Touch Pro was posted over at XDA Developers. Well, surprise surprise – XDA has received a legal complaint from Microsoft! XDA has, of course, pulled all the links for the cooked ROM as well as any other ROMs that are based on the yet-to-be-released operating system.

The e-mails sent to XDA Developers from Microsoft identify the site as ‘distributing unlicensed material and state’,

We hereby give notice of these activities to you and request that you take expeditious action to remove or disable access to the material described above, and thereby prevent the illegal reproduction and distribution of this copyright work(s) via your company’s network.

HTC gets hit with a lawsuit

Looks like HTC’s in some hot water! As German Handeslblatt reported yesterday, IPCom, a license manager for patents, filed an injunction claiming that HTC needed to pay license fees for the use of UMTS patents which are used in some of HTC’s Windows Mobile and Android UMTS smartphones.

A German court ruled in favor of IPCcom on February 27th. It confirmed the violation of a slew of patents, IPCom said it bought back in 2006 from German Robert Bosch GmbH.

Yikes! Sounds messy!
