“Of all the Windows Phone 7 launch devices, AT&T’s HTC Surround is likely the most curious. It’s a landscape slider built on the same basic internals as the rest of its platform siblings, but there’s no keyboard under that screen — the quarter-inch slide reveals an aluminum speaker bar and integrated kickstand, which combine to create a tiny little stereo system of sorts. Mix in Windows Phone 7’s heavy Zune integration, add in a dash of Dolby Mobile and SRS Wow “virtual surround” audio processing, and top it all off with 16GB of internal memory, and you have what might be the ultimate phone for on-the-go media consumption. But does the Surround live up to all that promise? Read on to find out!”
News abounds on the HTC Surround, this cute little package that makes sound it’s claim to fame. Engadget has it covered, so does PCMag, Phone Scoop, and Adam over at Pocketnow! So if you’re interested in getting some serious audio enjoyment out of a device, take a look at any or all of these to get the first impressions of this unique Windows Phone 7 device!

Dell are bringing the Venue Pro to the UK and Clove have a page listed on their site setting the price at a reasonable £440 and when you consider this is a network unlocked, windows phone 7 device packing a 5 megapixel camera, gorilla glass to toughen the screen for those of you worried about breaking it and it also comes with a slide out QWERTY keyboard.
According to the Clove website they are expecting first delivery of stock on the 8th November
“There are also some less well-known phones sitting around – for instance, another LG Windows Phone 7 handset (the GW910) was boxed all over the place, and that’s a chassis two device (as in it comes with a physical keyboard) so we know that won’t be available in the shops for a while.”
TechRadar was recently invited to spend some time poking around the Windows Phone 7 development lab on the Microsoft campus and reported about their experience. It seems there was much of what you would expect to find in such a lab. There was a mixture of real (i.e. human) and virtual testers, giving both the hardware and software aspects of the platform and test devices a thorough workout. Their report does unearth a few interesting tidbits, including the fact that Microsoft is claiming this is their most tested operating system ever. They also saw a couple of as yet unannounced and unreleased (at least officially) handsets from Toshiba and Acer. It appears from this look behind the scenes that Microsoft is dead serious about the Windows Phone 7 platform and is focused on ensuring a good user experience.
Surprise, surprise! I was under the impression that the first slate of Windows Phone 7 would be a bunch of touch-centric handsets with nary a keyboard toting device among them. My bad, I haven’t been following the rumours as closely as I should have. Then along comes HTC and Samsung with QWERTY sliders, and Dell blazing a trail with a portrait slider phone, which among the usual specs offers a 4.1″ WVGA AMOLED screen. The Venue Pro nee Lightning is apparently heading exclusively for T-Mobile (hit the link for a couple more pics). Price and availability haven’t been announced yet, but stay tuned over the next few weeks – I don’t think Dell’s going to miss the holidays with this beastie (although Samsung’s stranglehold over AMOLED supply has me crossing my fingers). With that form factor, I’m betting there’s going to a be a lot of interest.
“With a 4.1″ AMOLED display coupled with a built-in portrait keyboard, The Dell Venue Pro is designed both for productivity and entertainment.”
14.9mm isn’t too bad in terms of thickness for a bottom-keyboard slider. I liked the name “Lighting” more than Venue Pro, but I’ll forgive Dell because the 4.1″ AMOLED screen with a keyboard gives you potentially the best of both worlds. This phone is definitely on my short list!

Some new Windows Phone 7 demo videos have just been posted by Microsoft on their YouTube channel. We’re a little puzzled with some of them though – the “Get in the Game” video just shows you the Games Hub Tile .. just that.. for 30 seconds. Surely a game or two would’ve been better?
Click on to view them all, and don’t forget to be here on Monday afternoon when the first Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices will be shown off to the world.

SlashGear recently compared the on-screen keyboard on the HTC HD2 to the slide-out hardware keyboard on the new Nokia N900 and found that they preferred the on-screen kb on the HD2. This is in large part due to some terrific auto-correction and predictive text features HTC has implemented, but the massive 4.3″ capacitive touchscreen doesn’t hurt either.
“Even in the short time we’ve had the HD2, we’re already faster at typing on it in than we are with most hardware keyboards on smartphones.”
Resco Keyboard PRO is a powerful input method. It gives you the ability to write texts and control your applications faster than ever before. In addition to the system keyboard, there are three numeric layouts, including a “Writing Calculator” for typing numbers or numerical expressions. In addition, there is a special keyboard that allows you to customize your Pocket PC for fast insertion of frequently used phrases. The keyboard is fully skin able and supports more than 20 national keyboard layouts.
Purely touchscreen devices such as the Touch Diamond and the new Touch Diamond2 rely solely on a good onscreen keyboard.
The Touch Diamond’s on screen keyboard (available in T9, SureType, and QWERTY) is quite usable as an alternative to a hardware keyboard. Well, it’s no surprise that the new Touch Diamond2’s on screen keyboard has been even more improved over the native WinMo built in onscreen keyboard! Check out the new images of the HTC Touch Diamond2’s keyboard after the jump – elongated space bar, smaller number function key, d-pad button inclusion. Sweet!
Here’s another video from the Windows Mobile team featuring some things you can do with your Windows Mobile device that you may not already know. Definitely worth a watch!
There’s almost nothing I can say about this “luxury” phone that you won’t already be thinking when you hear it’s description.
Gresso’s Avantgarde Skeleton is a “skeleton” phone… and what does that mean? Well, you can see it’s circuitry through the back of the phone. And for $5000 each, what else could this phone possibly offer?
Gresso allows no compromises between luxury and functionality. This model Royal White Diamonds is destinated for those who have achieved everything and are accustomed to make great demands of life. The gadget is provided with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, 2 Gb memory, SMS/MMS/e-mail, Internet explorer, Outlook, WAP 2.0, GPRS, Bluetooth, USB-port, mini-USB, PC Synchronization, voice recorder, MP3-player, 2 MP camera.
If you find yourself making great demands of life, you should definitely have one of these. Hurry, though, they’ve only made 15 of them.
Are you in the market for a new Windows Mobile phone? Well the good folks over at Mobile Tech Review have just posted up a very detailed and lengthy video review of the new Sony Xperia X1. They are “very impressed” with this WinMo device:
The hardware is impeccable, the panels are both fascinating and useful, and of course there’s no carrier bloatware! Though other phones offer many of the same features, somehow the Xperia X1 has that special sauce where the whole is greater than just the sum of its features. It’s fun, it’s cool and it offers very good entertainment possibilities while also being a very good business device thanks to Windows Mobile, the hardware keyboard and push email. The Xperia is perfect for power users and those who like something new and different (courtesy of panels), and it’s priced at the high end where mostly power users tread. If you’re just looking for an affordable Windows Mobile touch screen phone with a single user interface, the Xperia isn’t for you.
WMExperts have put the Palm Treo Pro up against the AT&T Fuze to see who comes out the champion and it looks like the AT&T Fuze won by the mere skin of its teeth, as the saying goes.
So, how do these two devices measure up to each other?
According to today’s Wall Street Journal, HP is getting ready to launch a brand new Communicator before the year’s end. Could this be the previously leaked HP OAK that we heard about at the beginning of this year?
From what I can tell, the HP OAK looks to be an HP touchscreen version of the HTC S710 (Vox) — with two keyboards (digital and side-sliding QWERTY). It’s rumoured to have HSDPA, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth, running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
No more details are known about release date or price, but stay tuned!
Scroll function isn’t automatically enabled in many applications
So, readers – are any of you Sprint Touch Pro users having any issues? I’d love to hear about them. Let’s add to the list! (Or, hey, take away from it – I’d much rather hear that it’s worthwhile. I love the Touch Pro!)
phoneArena has just let me in on some late-breaking news given to them by an anonymous tipster about the HTC Touch Pro, Saga (CDMA version of the Epix), and Renown.
Looks like the Samsung Saga I770 (CDMA version of the Epix) can be ordered via the Internet and Telesales on Nov 14th for $199 with a 2-year contract (after $70 rebate). It features Dual-band CDMA, EVDO Rev A, Quad-band GSM, WiFi 802.11g/b, Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, Office, Opera and IE Mobile, Bluetooth, 2.55″ 320×320 pixel display, 2MP camera, microSDHC support up to 16GB, and comes with a SIM card pre-installed. Included in the box are adapters for use with the wall charger in other countries. Hint hint. :)
