Maybe it’s no Windows Mobile 6.5, but it’s nice to know HTC isn”t ignoring the poor schleps who don’t get Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrades.
For users of the not-too-long-ago really hot HTC Touch HD, HTC has just put out two new updates for Windows Mobile 6.1:
Office Mobile Enhancement: “this update is applicable to all ROM Versions” and “updates your Office Mobile products to make your life even more convenient, giving you the flexibility to work the way you like. Now with enhanced Find & Replace functionality, this feature frees you to quickly edit your documents on the go”.
Notifications Enhancement: “this update is applicable to all ROM Versions” and “combines your SMS function with our unique notifications to bring you your messages as soon as you get them. You will receive notifications whenever your phone is powered on and has reception, allowing you to stay close to the people you care about while on the go”.
I stumbled up on a forum thread over at XDA in which they’ve managed to get Android 1.5 running on an HTC Touch HD Windows Mobile device. This is actually the second beta of this hacked Android build – this version adds audio and GPRS support. You can download the app onto your SD card, extract all the files, then run haret.ext to start it up!
I haven’t got an HTC Touch HD lying around, so if someone gives this a try please let me know how it works!
I just saw this neat, free GPS-based spedometer for Windows Mobile devices over at XDA. The developer has tested this on an HTC Touch HD and says it works well in portrait or landscape, and it features day and night modes.
I’m giving it a try this weekend, I’m going to see how fast I can kayak down the Rideau Canal! If you’d like to give it a while, it is available for download for free from XDA. You’ll need to get the .Net framework too, if you don’t already have it installed.
While I’m still blown away by the HTC Leo’s giant 4.3″ capacitive touchscreen display with 480 x 800 resolution, I’ve just read that the new Snapdragon processor it’s sporting is just blazingly fast.
WMPower User reports that the processor performs about 300% faster overall than the Touch HD, with the Leo blowing the Touch HD by a factor of 18x in one 3D test. Click on to read the full benchmark tests.
Our good friend Julian Zrotz at PocketPC.ch has gotten his hands on a brand new HTC Touch Diamond2 review device and has shared with us some HD videos and pictures to help show off this sexy little touch phone.
Featured Videos: Unboxing, hardware tour, comparision with the original Diamond & HD, TouchFLO 3D 2, hardware tour, video performance comparison with HTC Touch HD, file explorer, and internet experience.
Looks like there are a slew of awesome WinMo 6.5 phones set to come out this year, according to WMPowerUser.
On top of the previously seen Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2, the “Firestone” (above), successor to the once promising Touch HD, runs a 3.6-inch WVGA display, 600MHz processor and Windows Mobile 6.5. According to my sources, this one should be out sometime in August 2009. There’s also the HTC Whitestone which packs a 3.6 inch WVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera, 256 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and has a Qualcomm 7600 processor running at an impressive 528 Mhz. The device will have both GSM and EVDO and debut on the Verizon network in September.
Most impressive to us so far though is the poorly code named HTC “Thoth” which is clearly the Athena successor. The Thoth features a huge 4.8 inch WVGA screen, a 5 megapixel camera, 256 MB RAM/512 MB ROM, Windows Mobile 6.5, of course… but get this: It runs on a Qualcomm 8250 processor at 1000 Mhz! Keep your eyes peeled for this sexy lil thing September 2009!
Check after the jump for some leaked pictures of these cool yet-to-be-announced devices!
That’s right! Pharos boasted today at CES that their newest unlocked 3G phone works on the 1700 MHz T-Mobile band and also the 850 MHz band.
James Oyang, PhD, President of Pharos, which just recently partnered with Inventec, had this to say about the new phone:
Most navigation solutions for smartphones only work when within a carrier coverage zone. We’ve equipped the Traveler 137 with our hybrid navigation system that follows you wherever you want to go and charges you only when you actually use it.
Can’t wait to try out IE 6 on 6? Well, here’s your chance… sooner than expected!
The good folks over at MoDaCo have just released a custom ROM for the HTC Touch HD and, to our surprise, IE 6 on 6 is included! The browser is not available as a separate download so you have to download the full ROM, but from what we’re hearing it’s a great ROM. The ROM, based on the HTC 1.19 Asia ROM, is in English.
You can find this awesome ROM over at MoDaCo. Be sure to let us know how you like it!
Not a big fan of the look of TouchFLO 3D on your HTC Touch HD? You’re in luck! Spb Mobile Shell has just updated their software (to version 2.1.3) and is now completely compatible with the HTC Touch HD.
I can only imagine (as I don’t have a Touch HD myself) that it would look really fantastic on the Touch HD’s huge WVGA screen.
If you’ve got a Touch HD, try it out and be sure to let me know!
There’s a strange story coming out of the British mobile scene about Orange UK’s sales people talking their customers out of upgrading to the HTC Touch HD of which they have obtained exclusive rights to in the British market.
Apparently there have been a slew of returns and complaints about this exclusive phone. A source over at msmobiles says:
Just tried to upgrade to the Touch HD and had the operator telling me about the high rate of returns. Apparently poor battery life, and that horrendous camera are putting people off them. The operator tried her hardest to put me off until I pointed out just how many Windows Mobile powered phones I have had (Windows Mobile 2002 and on). So not just returns but actively trying to encourage customers to not buy the orange UK exclusive.
Anyone here experiencing any problems?
What has Orange UK done to this phone? Or is the device flawed right from the gate?
This video from pocketnow shows off some of the cool software on the new HTC Touch HD. And, since the HTC Touch HD doesn’t have a hardware keyboard, be sure to check out the part of the video that takes a look at how usable the on-screen keyboard is — looks great!
This device seems very similar to many of the new Touch devices from HTC and actually runs the same version of TouchFLO 3D as the Samsung XPERIA X1.
We at WindowsMobile Cool would like to welcome our new guest writer Sérgio Fraiman of the popular Brazilian Windows Mobile site Diario do Mobile!
Who is Sérgio? Sérgio Fraiman, from Natal, Brazil, is a blogger, not unlike myself. He loves any and all things Windows Mobile! His all time favourite Windows Mobile device is the HTC Touch HD (Oooh me too!). If you’re interested in what Sérgio has to say about WinMo, follow him on Twitter.
You can look forward to reading Sérgio’s posts coming every Monday beginning Monday, November 10th right here on WindowsMobile Cool.
Orange has confirmed rumours about its 3 month exclusivity on the HTC Touch HD with a full press release which reveals an early November launch on the network.
The HTC Touch HD specs are pretty impressive with TouchFLO 3D technology, 3G/HSDPA and WiFi, a 3.8 inch WVGA screen, 5 megapixel auto-focus camera (with second VGA cam), 512MB flash; 288MB RAM, microSD slot, GPS and 1350 mAh battery. It’s powered by a Qualcomm MSM7201a 528 MHz CPU and runs Windows Mobile 6.1.
