Spotlight: Samsung Omnia vs. BlackBerry Storm

Recently I’ve noticed a lot of comments in our forum and abroad with people torn between the Samsung Omnia and the BlackBerry Storm. Personally, I’ve played with both and have to say that while I like the look of the Storm (sleek black with a nice big screen) the Omnia is the clear winner for me. One of the big turn offs for me with the Storm is (though I understand it was supposed to be a major selling point) its SurePress feature (the screen allows the user to navigate through the phone using their fingertip, similar to a computer’s mouse, and “click” the screen by physically pushing down the screen to select.) I’m a double-tap-to-select kinda gal, so it’s just not my style. I have the feeling my fingers would get tired of typing quite quickly on a device like the Storm. Alright, so maybe that’s nit-picky of me but that’s enough to rule it out for me, the text messaging addict. Plus the Omnia comes in 16GB and 8GB versions – cool!

Without further ado, I’ve gone ahead and broken down the specs into an easy to read chart. I hope this helps those of you choose wisely when deciding what device to take home and call your own!

XDA Flint packs a punch (and an overnight bag)

UK’s O2 has just launched the XDA Flint – an out-of-the-ordinary Windows Mobile device that’s sure to catch your eye. Sure, we’ve seen it before in the HTC Advantage, but it’s worth singling out again.

[ad]

The XDA Flint has 16GB of flash storage, GGSM/GPRS/EDGE compatibility, WiFi, Bluetooth, dual cameras (3mp and VGA), video output, and an ATI graphics chip. It’s is driven by a 624 mhz processor with 256mb of ROM and 128mb of RAM. The XDA Flint is also GPS-enabled (reportedly through a SiRF StarIII chipset) dual speakers and, yes, a 3.5mm audio jack.

Even though it packs all that, it’s still only 4.5 x 3.9 x .06 inches and weighs only 13.2 ounces but in comparison to the HTC Touch Pro (4.02 x 2.01 x .71, 5.82 ounces), this thing is a beast!

AT&T Fuze vs. Palm Treo Pro

WMExperts have put the Palm Treo Pro up against the AT&T Fuze to see who comes out the champion and it looks like the AT&T Fuze won by the mere skin of its teeth, as the saying goes.

So, how do these two devices measure up to each other?

Here’s the breakdown of their specs:

Treo Pro

Physically bigger but lighter in weight, dedicated buttons for WiFi and speaker deactivation, micro-USB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, unlocked (no branded software), Sprite Backup, Mobile Office and QuickGPS, Pocket IE, power on via button hit, attract fingerprints both on the casing and the screen, front facing keyboard, $450-500.

AT&T Fuze

Mini-USB port, mute via volume keys which prompts on screen UI settings, hand strap hole, proprietary headphone adapter, branded software, Sprite Backup, Mobile Office and QuickGPS, Pocket IE and Opera, IM application (Yahoo, AIM, MSN), TouchFLO, power on via power only, Attract fingerprints both on the casing and the screen, slide out keyboard, $499.

Verdict

WMExperts says it really comes down to personal preference for them – full keyboard, smaller foot print, larger screen, and a slightly faster processor.
But we all agree, both devices really rock the Windows Mobile scene right now. You can’t go wrong with either!
