Are you a world class hacker looking to rake in some sweet pocket change? Well, for one I’d like to welcome you to our site (please don’t hurt us) and two, I’d like to introduce you to the Pwn2Own contest at CanSecWest.
Pwn2Own is currently running both desktop browser hacking challenges as well as mobile operating system hacking challenges. The big five platforms – Windows Mobile, iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Symbian – are all represented and willing to shell out $10,000 to the hacker that successfully breaks through their security barriers… in exchange for the code, of course.
We don’t know yet how good these mobile OS hackers are, but I’m betting several people will walk away swingin’ a big ol’ bag of cash. The browser hacking challenge has already seen one galant programmer break into Safari in 10 seconds! Nice work!

There are rumours floating around that Windows Mobile 7 won’t see the light of day until 2010 at the earliest. And who started these rumours? None other than Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha.
So what is it? We’ve seen ‘early 2009′ predictions, we’ve seen ’second half of 2009′ predictions from Microsoft themselves. Who’s got it right?
Paired with the ongoing rumours that Motorola will completely abandon WinMo in favor of the “more competitive” (and totally free to license) Android - could this be some kind of “fine, I didn’t want to be your friend anyway” smack talk?
The Wall Street Journal announced this morning that Dell will be introducing two new mobile phones (codenamed ‘MePhone’) at MWC in February that will be so amazing that they look to take on market leaders Apple and Research In Motion head-to-head.
One of the phones will be touchscreen-only while the other will sport a slide out QWERTY (similar to the T-Mobile G1). One will run Windows Mobile and the other will run Android though at this point it is unclear which model will run which OS.
No further specs or carrier news are available. Rumour has it that the phones will go on sale September 9th, though I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Well, it looks like Motorola will soon be focusing all of its smartphone attention on Android. This major restructuring will likely come hand in hand with significant layoffs as well.
In the past, Motorola has made some very interesting and popular Windows Mobile handsets such as the Q series and the recently announced A3100. I’m sad to see them go but I’m not entirely surprised, I suppose.
With all the competition from the iPhone 3G and Android, did you know that – according to Steve Balmer’s keynote at CES - Windows Mobile still sold 20 million handsets last year? It’s true! Now my theory that Windows Mobile will rebound isn’t so far fetched! Especially considering that sexy new HTC lineup for 2009 that was just leaked. Lots of potential there!
Yep – you read that right. HTC is expecting to sell 3 million of their Touch Diamond devices by the end of 2008!
On November 21, HTC CEO Peter Chou said that before the end of the year the company expects to sell up to a million G1 (Android) devices and are expected to hit the 3 million mark with their popular Windows Mobile device, the HTC Touch Diamond.
HTC’s Chou also denied rumours of a pending layoff as well as rumours of decreased orders – proudly proclaiming that HTC was too tough for the global economic recession to weigh down. The company’s condition is so good, in fact, that they’re currently looking at acquiring a handset design company in the US.
According PC Magazine, Motorola’s Sanjay Jha has confirmed (though strangely non-chalantly) that Motorola expects to release a phone based on Windows Mobile 6.5 platform in the second half of 2009.
Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that is Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform,” Jha said. “We have now targeted new teams which are focused – in California and Seattle – to deliver experiences. That is where we have to differentiate.
Motorola also announced that it plans to eliminate its MOTOMAGX and Symbian platforms in order to focus on the Google Android, Windows Mobile, and P2K 3G solutions.
