The Games Hub with Xbox Live integration has been widely recognized as one of the biggest Windows Phone 7 advantages over its rivals. That being said, the platform will need some great games to attract and appease demanding consumers. IGN has begun to provide reviews of some of the first games to hit the platform. Specifically, they have reviewed Earthworm Jim, de Blob: Revolution, CarneyVale Showtime, and Glow Artisan. IGN will be adding reviews each day as the launch approaches.
This isn’t going to be a story about Microsoft’s return to dominance. Nor is it going to be the story of Microsoft’s failure to compete in the smartphone space. These mobile wars have only just begun and despite the advantage enjoyed by Apple and Google, there is no end in sight. In another twelve months we will see fierce competition from HP, Microsoft and Nokia. There’s a lot at stake, and no company is willing to give up the opportunity to own the next-PC market without a hell of a fight. Today is the beginning of Microsoft’s fight.
By now most of the Windows Phone 7 reviews have hit the web, but one more can’t hurt. Anandtech has an exhaustive review of the operating system, with lots of great photos to satiate your thirst for Windows Phone 7 news until the US launch next week. Hit the link for the full review.

Bad cell phone reception? The zBoost SOHO Cell Signal Booster might be able to help…emphasis on might. It really depends on where you’re located, and whether there’s enough signal to boost in the first place. Worth checking out if you’re not having any luck getting your wireless carrier to tweak things in your area…

“There isn’t a great deal between the launch handsets for the new operating system, given Microsoft’s strict control of the software and stringent minimum hardware specifications. But what sets the HTC 7 Mozart apart from other HTC handsets such as the HTC HD7 and HTC 7 Trophy?”

Techradar has reviewed both the HD7 (link here) and the 7 Mozart (here). Like many, they’ve pointed out the blemishes in WP7, but generally like the OS and these spanking new HTC devices. Want to know more? Hit the links for the reviews!

“November 8th is fast approaching and to kick off on the celebration Microsoft and AT&T are giving thousands of music fans the chance to see free concerts from Katy Perry in New York City and Maroon 5 in San Francisco…Also marking Windows Phone 7 availability in the U.S., Rob Dyrdek and Minka Kelly will race across the country on the Really Rally Road Trip, challenging people to change their relationship with the mobile phone.”
You’ll have to pop into certain AT&T stores to get a chance at tickets. Which ones will be announced via the Windows Phone 7 Faceboook page. I’m wondering how fast Rob and Minka have drive to get from NYC to SF in time for the concert – best I can figure is between an average of 110-130 mph. That’s a lot of speeding tickets :).

“Microsoft has been cramming tons of useful new features into Hotmail this year, and the venerable webmail app is looking better than ever. Today, Microsoft has announced the arrival of another new feature — one that is squarely aimed at encouraging new users to give Hotmail a try.”
As the article points out though, people are reluctant to switch because they like their existing email address. Now, if you like the Hotmail user interface and features, you can use your existing email address with it as long as your current email can be accessed via POP3. Hotmail will just pull those messages into your account and you can “send as” so the recipient sees only your preferred email address.
I’ve been doing this for a few years, but with the GMail interface. The problem with this (at least with GMail) is that you cannot see on your mobile device which emails are native and which are being pulled in from outside accounts, and all replies go out as if they were from your GMail account. I am not sure if Hotmail has addressed this or not, but I’d actually be surprised if they have. Anyone here tried this yet with Hotmail?
Todd Brix over at the Windows Phone Developer Blog has posted some information about the most recent updates to the app certification requirements. Of note are requirements that the app size be less than 225MB (down from 400MB), and information about apps that can run under the lock screen. The latter requirement is relevant for apps such as Pandora that you would run while the screen was off. Applications currently in the marketplace will be subject to the changes the next they are submitted for an update. Hit the link for more information and a link to the certification requirements document.
