A favourite blog of mine, jkOnTheRun, has just posted up a very interesting article entitled “The uphill battle Microsoft faces with Windows Mobile” wherein they discuss the trials and tribulations that Microsoft faces in trying to stay with their head above water in these shark infested negative-consumer-perception filled seas. (Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the greatest metaphor, but doesn’t it feel just right?)
I’m a Windows Mobile fan but I’m not naive enough to think that WinMo doesn’t have a bad rap. Is it for anything they did wrong specifically? Well, certainly they haven’t made all the best moves – that might be making light of it – but really, what company has been with out fumbles and screw ups?
One thing that jkOnTheRun’s post suggested that I’m not sure that I stand behind 100% was that “…consumers by and large don’t care what is driving their phone, they are focused on the phone itself. That’s why Apple has been so successful with the iPhone while other companies have struggled. The reality is that consumers don’t care (and often don’t even know) if their phone is powered by Windows Mobile or S60. They are only aware of the particular phone they use or want and what others say about it.”
What do you think? Do you know what’s running your mobile phone? Do you care?

An awesome tipster has just sent me the best leak I’ve seen so far – 30 hi-res WinMo 6.5 screenshots for all of us to ogle!
I’ve generally been of the mind that I was going to look right past WinMo 6.5 and on to WinMo 7 instead but these latest shots are starting to pique my interest in WinMo 6.5! What do you think?
Thanks, Julian Z.!

The folks at Gizmodo have brought up a very good question: Should Sprint drop the Palm Treo Pro with the Palm Pre on its way?
I would personally argue that they’re apples and oranges. They can both appeal to different audiences – WinMo fans, Palm OS fans, QWERTY lovers, and touch screen addicts. Why choose? Keep both, Sprint!
What do you think?

There are rumours floating around that Windows Mobile 7 won’t see the light of day until 2010 at the earliest. And who started these rumours? None other than Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha.
So what is it? We’ve seen ‘early 2009′ predictions, we’ve seen ’second half of 2009′ predictions from Microsoft themselves. Who’s got it right?
Paired with the ongoing rumours that Motorola will completely abandon WinMo in favor of the “more competitive” (and totally free to license) Android - could this be some kind of “fine, I didn’t want to be your friend anyway” smack talk?

MobileJaw has just posted a fantastic guide to removing the Application Lock on your HTC s740 smartphone.
Application Lock limits the amount of access an application has to certain parts of the phone – without it, applications can do and access pretty much anything. To the other extreme, full Application Lock means that no applications can even be installed. HTC’s latest non-touch screen device, the s740, falls somewhere in the middle.
Overall, this is a good thing because it protects the average user from installing harmful applications. But for those of us that want more, it’s a pain. With the s740, it appears to be a little more restrictive than in the past. I’ve had problems installing some of my everyday applications that normally have not caused me any problems.

Pocket Informant, Editor’s Choice and Winner of 2008 Best PIM award from Smartphone and Pocket PC Magazine, was the first full PIM (personal information management) for Windows Mobile in 2000 and with version 8 Smartphones are now fully supported. With a scalable interface that can go between the touchable finger user interface, to a stylus use interface, all the way to a completely one handed interface Pocket Informant 8 works the way you want it to.
My full review – including plenty of screenshots, key features, and install info – is after the jump!
Just to prove Gil Bouhnick wrong, this story will be seen on another mobile blog — this one!
Bouhnick has made the keen (and hilarious) observation that the above WinMo case looks remarkably like Magneto’s helmet. Don’t you think?
On that note, I challenge YOU, fair readers. We want more images like this! Show me what you creative types have got! Found a headset that looks like Geordi La Forge’s visor? Show me! Heck, think spots on your cat look remarkably like a Palm Treo Pro? Prove it!

I love this software! And, as you already know, Spb makes plenty of things that I love dearly and I’m not ashamed to admit it!
Spb Weather is a powerful weather Today plug-in. You can customize weather views, skins and even weather forecast data sources. Spb Pocket Plus users can save space on their Today screens running Spb Weather in a form of a separate tab.
Read on “Review: Spb Weather” for the full review including plenty of screenshots!
Here’s another helpful video tutorial from the folks at Windows Mobile. It shows you how to use instant messaging on your WinMo phone effectively. So if you’re new to Windows Mobile or are not quite sure how to do this, or are just plain curious as to what they have to say on the matter, be sure to check out this video!

Here’s another video from the Windows Mobile team featuring some things you can do with your Windows Mobile device that you may not already know. Definitely worth a watch!

Looking to expand your vocabulary? Want to bring out the intellectual in you? Word of the Day 2009 by Enigma Games promises to do just that.
Key Features:
The software is very simple – just as its title states. If this is what you’re looking for, go ahead and download it right here. And if you’re curious, here’s a selling point: it’s only $2.95! What have you got to lose?

With all the competition from the iPhone 3G and Android, did you know that – according to Steve Balmer’s keynote at CES - Windows Mobile still sold 20 million handsets last year? It’s true! Now my theory that Windows Mobile will rebound isn’t so far fetched! Especially considering that sexy new HTC lineup for 2009 that was just leaked. Lots of potential there!
