Another Microsoft Tablet PC Prototype: Codex

Hot on the heels of the Microsoft Courier tablet pc video comes this second round of Microsoft tablet pc pics, this time on one called Codex. Perhaps destined to be Courier v.1, the Codex looks like it is designed to work like a traditional filofax or organizer, but with Windows 7 powering everything between the leather covers.

The Microsoft Codex features two 4.6″ touchscreens that can be positioned in any number of ways. Like the Microsoft Courier, it relies heavily on InkSeine, which is looking like a the byproduct of Microsoft OneNote and Journal and a lot of steroids.

This product appears to be pretty legit, as it comes straight from the Microsoft research team working on the Codex project. There are tonnes of pics and info on this guy over at the site. There’s also a 5-minute video of the Microsoft Codex dual-screen tablet pc in action available over at beingmanman.com.

These two devices make one wonder if Microsoft is going to get into the tablet pc game in the same manner in which they’ve entered the media player and gaming markets with the Zune and X-box, respectively. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile strategy, despite persistent rumors, is to make money on licensing the OS and not through hardware sales. Recent pics and stories seem to question that, and I’ve personally always thought there had to be something behind their years-old purchase of Danger, maker of the nifty SideKick series.

Both of these tablet PCs, the Codex and the Courier, are only in the conceptual and research stage, but some product of this ilk will likely hit markets eventually. It’s well known that Mr. Gates is a huge fan of the tablet and Surface-style PCs, so it seems like a ‘when’, rather than an ‘if’.
