There’s a strange story coming out of the British mobile scene about Orange UK’s sales people talking their customers out of upgrading to the HTC Touch HD of which they have obtained exclusive rights to in the British market.
Apparently there have been a slew of returns and complaints about this exclusive phone. A source over at msmobiles says:
Just tried to upgrade to the Touch HD and had the operator telling me about the high rate of returns. Apparently poor battery life, and that horrendous camera are putting people off them. The operator tried her hardest to put me off until I pointed out just how many Windows Mobile powered phones I have had (Windows Mobile 2002 and on). So not just returns but actively trying to encourage customers to not buy the orange UK exclusive.
Anyone here experiencing any problems?
What has Orange UK done to this phone? Or is the device flawed right from the gate?

Just got delivery of this super powerful hand set last week and although was initally excited and stunned with its features it cannot do the basic calling and sending a text message without having to press 101 buttons! I have also had issues with call reception incoming calls have a loud snowy noise in the background which prevents a two-way call.
I am in the process of returning this handset to orange and changing it for a nokia or blackberry. Truely disappointed with this handset!
Good to hear feedback about it, sad to hear it’s so terrible!
Do you have the Xperia or Omnia available to you? Cause those are some really nice devices, for sure. Be sure to check them out!
My boyfriend has a BlackBerry Bold and it’s pretty fantastic too. It all depends what you’d like to use the device for, right?
Thanks for letting us know about your experience with the Touch HD!
Received the phone yesterday, turned it on today and the only disappointing aspect of the fone, in my opinion is the camera and video camera. Utterly atrocious. For a 5 mega i expected more, the 2 mega on my ericsson w900i is much better.
The camera and video camera both suffer from too much lag, the slightest movement will result in blurred images!! The auto focus is also too slow, when its finally ready to take the shot, your arm’ll drop due to tiredness and you’ll have completely missed the shot. The default contrast settings for both the camera and video camera are absolutely appalling. I have tried to change the settings for better results but no luck.
I haven’t yet made a` phone call, so therefore i cannot comment any call related issues.
If the pre mentioned issues can be fixed, then I’ll keep the mobile otherwise its on a one way journey back to orange.
Great phone, but a truly poor camera, such a shame, but having lived with mine for a fortnight, no way is it going back!!!
Have you played with a Touch Pro or a Diamond, Dave? Any big differences between yours and those? I’m very curious!
I have the TouchHD on Orange for about since 22 Jan. I am already missing my N95! The camera isn’t too bad but can be slow. Maybe Orange has upgraded to a later firmware. The real problems for me is call quality – just too many dropped calls and people on the other end of a call says “Hello! Helloooo can you hear me? Helloooo” also, when a call is made the screen blanks out. There is no way to change this as far as I can tell and it is the most stupid thing I have ever seen. If I need to punch in a number, put the caller on hold or other functions I am fumbling to get the screen on again!. It’s also running on Window’s mobile which to be frank is not worthy for the job. I am currently running through online blogs looking at fixes and updates to see what can be done.
i have just tried to upgrade to the touch HD and Orange told me they had a shipment but sent them back because they were faulty they also said i should wait a couple of months for something better!?!?!?!.
I currently have a htc tytn ii so the touch hd seems a logical upgrade..providing orange arent screwing with the software (like they have on my tytn ii) anybody know whether the touchflow is intact? or have orange put there own rubish on it?
I have had my HTC Touch HD since january, having waited from before christmas for stock to arrive… i have had no issues with it at all, apart from the problems that HTC have provided hotfixes for. It works great and is a wonderful phone to use! Orange, thank GOD have not branded the menus or anything, so this is a plus point…
