How-to: Internet Sharing – love between a laptop and a Windows Mobile phone

Today I had a bit of a scramble to find a reliable internet connection in order to bring you the latest Windows Mobile news so I decided now was a good time to use WinMo’s Internet Sharing application. If you haven’t tried this out – I suggest you do! It’s very easy and works better than you expect it will, I assure you. For a bit of a how-to guide and some explanation, please continue reading!

Internet Sharing
on lets you utilize your Windows Mobile device as a data modem. Hardly revolutionary … but what is cool is that if you have Activesync 4.2 or greater or Windows Vista you don’t need to install any drivers or do any PC configuration to get it to work. You simply plug the device in and it will automatically connect to our default APN and use the device as your laptop modem. It replaces the old modem link application. It will work over both USB and Bluetooth.

Requirements

To use this you need two things:

1) A PC using Vista or Windows XP with Activesync 4.2 or greater (preferably with XP SP2)
2) A Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 3.0 (or greater) or a Windows Mobile 6 device.

USB Setup

If you want to use this via USB you simply have to do the following:

1. Find the Internet Sharing application and run it.

2. In the PC Connection list, select USB.

3. In the Network Connection list, select the name of connection that your device uses to connect to the Internet.

4. Press Connect

5. Plug in the USB cable between your device and the computer.

You will then see the device stating ‘Connected‘ and in a few seconds your PC will be connected to the Internet.

Bluetooth Setup

You can also use Internet Sharing over Bluetooth.

1. First pair your device with your laptop and create a partnership.
2. Then run the Internet Sharing program on your device.
3. Select Bluetooth PAN as the PC Connection.
4. From the Network Connection list, select the name of the connection that your device uses to connect to the internet.
5. Press Connect.
6. On your computer, set up a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) with your device.
a. Click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
b. Under Personal Area Network, click the Bluetooth Network Connection icon.
c. Under Network Tasks, click View Bluetooth network devices.
d. In the Bluetooth Personal Area Network Devices dialog box, select your device, then click Connect.

You’re on the internet!

This is such an easy way of getting Internet access from your laptop and removes the need to carry a data card or have another SIM in your laptop for data access.

I am connecting a Windows Mobile Device to my laptop thru ActiveSync . How do I use the internet connection available on my laptop onto my Windows Mobile Device ?

So basically, I am asking if the opposite of what you have described is possible.

  4. Bambi Blue says:

Wow, good question, Rohan. I’ve actually never even thought of that – that could be really useful.

Let me look into it and get back to you ASAP.

What kind of phone are you running?

Actaully i was looking for sharing the Internet on my laptop to be used on my mobile. I’m using O2 XDA atom life.

I’ve been looking for the same thing. It looks as though the phone wasn’t really designed that way; partly for a lot of reasons. Essentially HTC Touch has no USB host capabilities. Meaning the PC can communicate with it as a peripheral but not the other way around. Not to say that it couldn’t be done; but it would require a desktop app to “package” the internet to the device, unless you have the wi-fi version, then you may be able to set your laptop to broadcast your network and allwow connections. It sounds however like you have the CDMA [touch] version, in which case it’s back to the packager.

Is is possible to do the opposite? I want my WinMo to use internet connection from my PC via USB. Is it possible?

  8. Jackie says:

I am also wondering if I could use the internet on my PC on my smartphone using a USB. I am using the smasung blackjack 2

  9. Ray Luebbert says:

I imagine this requires a two part solution, essentially creating a network bridge between the internet source and the WinMo on the desktop, and then making the WinMo to be able to look for a wired internet connection. I have not seen anything like either of these so far. I suppose it is technically possible though.

a big flaw is that you’re disconnected when you start a phone call… this wasn’t the case with my old SonyEricsson w880

I have done this before with my Dash. It works much batter with Vista than with my older Xp sp3. Is the speed the same connecting through the dash as it would be with a data card? If the data card still uses edge and gprs I would assume the speed would be the same unless they come out with a new 3g card …right? Just wondering if the card would be faster.

This program works with a new samsung behold, please reply me to my email, mandilon07@aol.com, thanks and have a nice day.

  13. I am currently using the GPRS (global package radio service) to connect internet via. mobile phone. Actually the connection is too slow as it is a wireless broadband service :(

I’m using Omnia ( Samsung I900 ), i’m confused to practise Internet sharing by Bluetooth to Windows Vista. Would you mind to make a guidance to help me, please…
    Thanks

I’m using a TMobile Dash just like yours. However, even after connecting to a WiFi network, under “Network Connections” in “Internet Sharing”, I only see “TMobile Data” and “TMobile MMS” as options – I do not see the WiFi network. Any ideas how I can connect my laptop through my Dash using the WiFi network?

In the screenshots above, “Rogers Internet” looks like a wifi network, so I don’t know what’s happening in mine.

    Thanks

With regards to doing the opposite, and using the computers Internet connection on the windows mobile device using USB. I thought this was a standard feature. When ever I connected through USB active sync my mobile device used the main Internet connection. I’m sure there was even a setting to turn it off in active sync.

  17. Shawn S. Altorio says:

I setup WinMo Internet Sharing on my HP iPAQ 910c today, and it works great.

My question is in regards to Rogers Wireless (since the OP and a few others here have mentioned it specifically). Does the tethered data usage get deducted from your regular data pool (500mb in my case), or is it charged separately?

I had some concern, so I contacted Rogers and talked with both a standard CSR as well as their Data Plan people, and neither could tell me anything more than “tethering is not supported by Rogers, and you may be charged alot for using it” (not very helpful).

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  19. Jesse says:

At the top of the post you mention this:

    2) A Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 3.0 (or greater)

How do i find out what AKU version is on the O2 Atom Exec as it doesn’t seem ot have the Internet Sharing program on it :(

Cheers Bambi & anyone else who can help me out
